Question by Jessthemess: What is the best Nikon Digital SLR for an intermediate student?
My boyfriend is really getting into photography and really wants a camera, but I don't know what to get him. I know he wants a Nikon Digital SLR, with interchangeable lenses, but I'm just not sure what the best camera for the money is. I'm clueless about this stuff. Thanks for your help!

Nikon d3100 and 18-55mm VR lens is a good choice, for $ 440-$ 600. Make sure to get an SD card as well.

Yeah, the Nikon D3100 is a pretty decent DSLR camera you can buy.
Or the D40 for about $ 480 USD.
Wow he must be one really lucky guy !:D
The D3100 is nikon’s entry level camera. The 5100 adds a few features, but none that I see worth the extra cost. If he already has a DSLR, I’d say he would probably want the D7000 which is probably the best bargain in the DSLR market but it over $ 1000.
The Nikon D3100 is a great option, its and entry level dSLR and would give absolutely stunning shots and videos alike. Its features include the following:
–14.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor,
–3-inch monitor with One-Touch Live View shooting and movie capture,
–Includes 3x 18-55mm Zoom-NIKKOR VR Image Stabilization lens,
–Full 1080p HD Cinematic Video with full-time autofocus and sound,
–Easy-To-Use Nikon Guide Mode with intuitive controls and on-board assistance,
–Capture images to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards (you’ll have to buy it separately, its not included with the camera and lens).

I’d also suggest that you look at the Nikon D5100 which is one step ahead of the D3100 and has more features, take a look:

Both are great, get the one that fits the bill.
I think most DSLRs might be a bit too expensive for a gift, unless you really know it’s what he wants. All Nikon DSLRs will be good, and they all allow you to change lenses.
Nikon D3100 is the best for the price, around $ 600.
